First Presbyterian Church, among the first churches to be established in Denison, has served the community through faith and service for over 150 years. Shortly after the construction of the first church structure was completed, the congregation received a large gift of 182 books, to be used for the creation of a free library for the community. The church received a gift of a great bell, which was used not only to call members and visitors into its doors for Sunday School and worship, but to alert the community to fires and other emergencies. The doors of the church were always open so that volunteer firefighters and others could be notified and brought together to respond to alarms.
From the church’s beginning, it has been indelibly engaged in the life of Denison and Grayson County, providing resources that have contributed to the betterment of the community.
The current congregation is made up of a small number of members, while having a wonderful resource to be made available to the community through the use of its facilities.
First Presbyterian Church sees a new purpose for itself in the life of Denison, Texas, by establishing a 501(c)(3) organization to be known as Blessings on Burnett, providing space in a central location for non-profit organizations to offer services to the community. The physical plant can accommodate multiple organizations for a variety of uses: office space, public performances of music, plays, or speaking, art or museum displays, clothing and food distribution, gatherings of up to 250 participants, and a kitchen and banquet hall serving up to 100 guests.
Blessings on Burnett will make facilities available by opening doors to organizations in the community that seek to assist persons who find themselves in need, organizations in need of space to provide service to the community, occasional use of space for special meetings of public, private, or civic organizations, and start up efforts for organizations that do not have their own space.
Blessings on Burnett will be a non-profit hub for the community where a variety of organizations may share common space, while being able to have dedicated space for particular purposes. As an organization making itself available to the community as a central location near the Denison Public Library and in close proximity to downtown Denison, Blessings on Burnett seeks funding through grants from local philanthropies, community donations, and fees for dedicated and shared space.
